Artistic polyvalence

Artist painter Michel Vermeulen is Canada's official representative in the most prestigious competition and visual arts event in the world.

Marc de Roussan (Le marché de l'art au Québec)His style is somewhere between impressionism and cubism, his palette of vibrant color is unique and the three dimensional effect that permeates his work has coined a brand new artistic expression,"Vermeulenism"! His is a clever mixture of several post modern styles merging into one that is truly unique.

Vermeulen has for a long time exploited musical themes, particularly pianos. He experimented in the abstract after having completed an incredible homage to his mentor and teacher, Riopelle. Today it is human beings that inspire his work especially women, thus his latest collection "Vermeulen's Erotica". This collection is a perfect illustration of his new direction for the future.

One of Vermeulen's greatest talents is his artistic polyvalence. As soon as he masters a particular theme or a style he moves on to the next. Vermeulen's desire to constantly surpass himself is the stuff of the great masters. Vermeulen is one of the world's great contemporary painters...if not the greatest.

His mentor, Jean-Paul Riopelle described him as a genius

Victor B.Forbes (FineArts Magazine)With the paintbrush, adding that when you are in the presence of a Vermeulen canvas, you have the impression that your entire soul is part of his work of art, as if the painting had always been an integral part of your being. Towards the end of his life, Riopelle was convinced that Vermeulen was his 'dauphin' and would take his place as one of the great painters of all time!

In 2005 Vermeulen unveiled a unique and magical tribute to his mentor «Hommage à Jean-Paul Riopelle». This work is composed of 6 canvases (of differing techniques) that resume the majestic career of the great Canadian master Riopelle. In this piece Vermeulen uses several of Riopelle's themes and icons; the owl, the white goose, his abstract images as well as a tip of the hat to Riopelle's seminal piece «Hommage à Rosa Luxenbourg». Michel also leaves a personal touch with his pears and candles that have become almost a trademark for Vermeulen over the years.

Today Vermeulen is ranked in the top ten contemporary painters in the world, according to FineArts Magazine and its celebrated editor Victor B. Forbes. According to Forbes, "Michel Vermeulen is the painter of the hour in the world of international visual arts. No one can remain indifferent to this man's work that transcends our soul and makes us smile as if joy invades our being by looking at his canvasses. Never has a painter touched me so much. Vermeulen will definitely be in a very select group of the greatest artists in history."

Michel Vermeulen is a painter with luxurious talent, strong art expression and very specific poetics.

His painting is lyrical, almost illustrative, but with deep roots in the modern painting of the 20th century. You could easily find the modest signs of quoting the cubism, impressionism, surrealism and sometimes even covered expressionism. However, with strong lyricism of the expression, Vermeulen brings very openly the emotions in his works and in that way gives them a completely new, post-modernist dimension. The tradition is here used as an instrument, or as a selection of instruments used by the artist skilfully and with inspiration.

Le piano arlequinThe painter uses colours as " the mirror of the soul" or, even, as the soul itself. Thanks to that, his works make very intimate connection with the observer. You are not yourself aware of the fact that those paintings have succeeded to enter your soul, that they have become part of your personal emotions, and, of course, then they look like something very familiar - something that you know well and that you love. Of course, in that way you only confirm that you have a soul which has adopted these paintings and recognized them as its integral part. Such effect cannot be achieved either with technique, or style, or paraphrasing the other authors, but with the authentic talent and expression of this author, who has succeeded in approaching the human soul in the way Dostoyevsky has succeeded in literature. But in contrast to Dostoyevsky, who was mostly occupied with the abysses of the human soul, Vermeulen is more occupied with the notion of the universal beauty, the beauty which conquers the observer. Of course, this painter does not avoid the abysses of the human soul. If we observe better the colouring of these paintings, we will see some marvellous darkening on the edges, we will see a bit indented and almost broken shapes.

On the plan of symbolism, it seems that forms and colours are intentionally confronted and in that way the human dualism is presented. The warmth, singing and ease of colours are confronted to almost expressionistic form. As if the man's destiny is a dream about the beauty and the almost passionate cruelty of existence. The composition is balanced to that point, that it covers very skilfully the whole layers of hidden meanings, emotions, hopes and fears.

For almost three decades I have been engaged in art criticism, but until now I have never met a painter who uses so skilfully the post-modern and modern tradition ( this expression alone would represent "the dissonance" mentioned by H. Fridrich), the general places of modern art, in order to build his own, authentic expression. As in the system of matrix, everything is interwoven with dreams of different dreamers, dreamt completely through the dream of one artist. If for E. A. Poe the life was only " the dream about the dream", then for this artist: the art is a dream about dreams which have been dream it by the others. Vermeulen is a great master.

When you come across the works of Michel Vermeulen your first thought will be: " These works are familiar to me. " As I have already mentioned, they are familiar to you to that extent to which your own soul is familiar to you. A man without a soul should not look at these paintings, they will have no meaning to him. With these paintings, you will again go back to dreams, to the magic of life, to the magic of poetic art expression, to forgotten youth and the future from which the beauty shines. Vermeulen is one of the best painter in the world and now, I know why.
